Tyler was invited to a birthday party yesterday at “Safety City” which is essentially a miniature city where the kids are given mini motorized scooters to ride. Included as part of the package is a 20 minutes “safety” session where the rules of crossing a road safely, etc. are explained. Tyler was so excited about this party. He couldn’t wait to drive his very own “quad”. Such a great party for little boys. They were thoroughly engaged in this for a full 45 minutes. Tyler has been talking about it nonstop since we arrived home. He wants to have his Read More »
a man who cooks supper…
did ya miss me?
Hunter was invited for a sleepover last night and when she got home, Tyler chased her around the house for half an hour teasing her, “did ya miss me Sissy?”. I think he missed her. We are so lucky that these kids get along so well. play together. laugh together. love together. I have a friend who’s kids, a boy and a girl, are 4 years apart like ours and she says that they have never played together. I never considered this concept until she pointed out to me how close my kids are. Every night, Tyler asks for a Read More »
circus antics…
dance competition season is finally over. we have been very busy attending 4 different dance competitions for Hunter, and we traveled to U of A twice for each competition, since she competes as a group entry with her Grade 3/4 ballet class and then as a solo entry in the character ballet solo category. This pic is with her ballet class and the young man in the middle has a fabulous handmade costume (by mom) to match the girls costumes. I could not believe the detail put into the criss cross vest. What a talented sewing mom! It is rainy Read More »

Hunter brought 2 friends home from school. went to dairy queen for supper and had blizzards. the girls are outside playing badminton, frisbie, and blowing bubbles. here is another layout-Hunter’s 10th birthday at American Girl Place in Chicago. It is so great to be caught up in my scrapbooking with birthday parties….now to get caught up in other things as well. this no working thing is like having adhd at times. Read More »

Here’s what i did today: woke up late at 8am. got the kids a quick breakfast. made lunches. got to school on time. came home and went for a 28 minute walk. cleaned kitchen and organized fridge. packed and messed up scrapbooking stuff again. took a quick shower and went to school with wet hair to pick up Tyler. picked up the mail. made lunch for Tyler and I. Put sweet n sour chicken in the slow cooker for supper. Called my scrapbook friend to finalize plans. decided that not buying any new scrapbook stuff wasn’t any fun. went to Read More »
a beautiful mess….
…. it all started as a very simple task- to pack for a 3 day scrapbooking retreat. I don’t know how I get myself into these things, but a mess is all I have accomplished so far. Why do I feel the need to sort & organize before I pack? I feel so out of touch with my photos…. I haven’t made the time to scrapbook lately. I also gave myself a challenge-NOT to buy anything new for this trip. I have boxes of paper as it is….I don’t need to add to it. The designated project for this retreat… Read More »
my little reader…..
Amazing to me how two children from the same household can be completely different learners. For Hunter, reading came very easily. The year after she completed primary, she just literally opened up a book and started reading. The words just flowed for her and she could read with such expression, in both English & French. Even now, she continues to be a very strong reader. We have not reached the end of Grade 5, yet she has completed the “leveled” reading at school to the end of Grade 6. She is reading at level 30+ which is considered the reading Read More »
il divo…
I have been a really bad blogger lately.Last week I went to this spectacular performance. No words to describe how beautiful it was.
funny bunny…..
My mom made this cute cake quite often when I was growing up as an Easter treat, so the first thing I asked her when I learned that she & Dad were coming for Easter is if she could make the bunny cake with the kids. We use our traditional white butter birthday cake recipe for two 9″ circles which we then cut into the parts to make the bunny. The kids call it the “funny bunny” cake and we have had more fun looking at it. We had a great Easter weekend with Mom & Dad. We had lots Read More »
Queen Bees & Wannabees….
When the kids were smaller, I used to read quite a few parenting books, but I haven’t read any for a long time. I picked up this book from the library since I have heard so much about it. It’s a fascinating read. The first couple chapters blew me away with it’s accurate description of girl relationships and cliques. This a must read for parents of girls. The first chapter, titled “Cliques & Popularity” gets right to the heart of the issue by describing the different personalities and roles that make up the girl clique. Such roles as Queen Bee, Read More »
spring break….
This past week was spring break for our kids. We went to Calgary for a few days for a little break. We stayed in a very nice suite in a hotel close to Ron’s office. We played, relaxed, and swam and swam some more. I spent some time in the hot tub. Read a good book. It’s so great that the kids are old enough now that if I need to run to the lobby for some ice or a paper, they can stay for a few minutes on their own with no disasters. I am so proud of them Read More »
vertigo…
This word didn’t mean very much to me a few weeks ago, but it has come to mean something suddenly. A week ago today I had the life scared out of me. Ron came home from a week of travel feeling a little achy…maybe a touch of the flu. Sunday morning he rose early to get Tyler to hockey for 8:30. Hunter and I were still in bed….it being ‘spring forward’ time change and all.Suddenly, the phone rang. It was a parent from the arena calling to tell me that Ron was throwing up and dizzy and could I come Read More »
reading….
“Documenting life’s milestones and passages through photographs, and assembling them in albums or scrapbooking them creates a treasure that has lasting meaning. We send a message to our children that they matter, that their experiences are important, and that we love them. We teach them to cherish the people and moments in their lives when we cherish them in theirs.” ~ Sandra Magsamen in Living Artfully
meet “stickzilla”…
See the thing above that looks like a stick? It’s a stick bug. A grade one teacher at school who has been so nice to us since we moved here gave Tyler a “stick” bug today for a pet. I thought he was going to explode with excitement. She told him yesterday that he could pick up his stick bug today, so we had to go out and look for some type of home for the stick bug. All I have been hearing about since yesterday is the stick bug. Stick bug this & stick bug that…what the stick bug Read More »
hurricane on the bayou….
The kids had no school last Friday, so we had the chance to go to the Imax to see this film. It was about Hurricane Katrina, but from the perspective of what happened to the wetlands and the wildlife when this hurricane lashed down on Louisianna. Tyler was fascinated by the impact on the crocodiles and how many croc babies were simply blown away by the hurricane.
and here’s a project I made..
when I attended the scrapbook event. This was a fun project to make. It is built around two small canvases that are first painted. Then a tiny accordian fold booklet is adhered on top and embellished. Wonderful new Creative Imaginations product.
meeting my favorite scrapbooker….
Two Saturdays ago, I had the opportunity to attend a two day scrapbooking event where I had the chance to meet my favorite scrapbooker-Becky Higgins. I have been following her work in Creating Keepsakes magazines since 1999 and I own ALL of her books on scrapbooking. My current favorite is “Our Family Scrapbooks”. Love this book. I have met Becky on two other occasions-at Creating Keepsakes University in Florida in 2003 and Creating Keepsakes University in Boston in 2004, but this time I was smart enough to take my copies of her books for her to sign. Loved chatting with Read More »
the apple dumpling gang.
“If we meet again in that big roundup in the sky sometime, I’m gonna spread my blanket ‘side of yours, just the same as always.” ~Amos to Theodore in the Apple Dumpling Gang Remember this movie? 1975. Walt Disney production. I remember watching it as a kid. We rented it recently for the kids and it was one of our best family movie nights ever. The kids thought it was hilarious. How could you not laugh at a pair up of these two men? The facial expressions and the eyes. Kids don’t get that in the movies made today. Some Read More »
yippee…. it’s march
I am so very happy that March is here and spring is not far off. February went by in a blur. 5 days after we got home from Chilliwack, we were up at 5am on Saturday morning to leave for a skating competition for Camrose. We went as a family, and it was so nice for Hunter & I to NOT have to travel on the dreaded bus again. Hunter’s team had a great skate and I was very busy. Two moms on the Adult team asked me if I could watch their babies while they had practice ice. I Read More »
The long, long journey home.
After a great weekend of skating, we poured back on the bus for our journey home. The ceremonies ended around 5pm and we left shortly after. The plan was for us to drive all night and arrive back in Edmonton around 4am Monday morning. That was the plan anyway. We stopped in Kamploops around 8pm for a late dinner. While we were there, one of the girls on the Novice team sitting at our table got a phone call from her Mom & Dad, who were driving back to Edmonton in their own car, except that they were 4 hours Read More »
Mount Robson
This is Mount Robson. I took this picture from the bus on the way to Chilliwack. It was a fantastic, clear view of Canada’s highest peak. I am told that people who drive this route often rarely have a *clear* view of the peak, so this was a spectacular day.
Placing 3rd at Westerns.
The big news from Chilliwack was that our team placed 3rd in the Pre-Novice category. This was an incredible feat considering that after our first skate on Saturday, the girls had a fall and we placed 7th out of 8 teams. This first skate counted for 50% of the final mark, so we did not have high hopes. But on Sunday, the girls had a clean skate with perfect unison and wonderful expression and placed 3rd overall. We were all jumping with joy. The Northern Lites had a great weekend, with 4 of 6 placing in 1st, 2nd, or 3rd.
chillin in chillliwack.
We had an awesome trip to Chilliwack. Tyler & Ron drove us to the bus for 5:45 am and we were on the road by 6am. Our bus was home to the Pre-Novice, Novice & Junior Teams. It was really quite quiet as everyone was sleeping until around 8:30 am when we stoppped at Timmy’s in Hinton. Of course, Hunter with the bottomless stomach, asks me if she can get “lunch”-she wants a full meal deal of a sandwich, donut and drink and it’s gone before we get back on the bus. I am starting to think that if it’s Read More »
chilliwack.
Hunter and I are off tomorrow morning bright and early (5:45 am) to Chillliwack for the Western Synchro Skating Championships. The club is taking 2 buses for 6 teams and we will be driving thru the rocky mountains of Jasper. The trip will take about 10 hours. We have lots of snacks packed, as well as a pillow and blanket. Tyler is quite excited about the “boys” weekend.Hunter has an on ice and off ice practice on Friday, and her team skates on Saturday. We are looking forward to visiting Chilliwack for the very first time. Nothing like a little Read More »
birthday party planning…
I cannot believe that January is almost finished. I am glad because I have grown quite tired of winter. I have been busy the last few weeks finishing up my duties with the fundraising job with Hunter’s skating club. Every couple of years, I see to take on a volunteer job that just totally burns me out and this JOB did it. Managing 10 campaigns for over 100 skaters was a lot of work, but it was the total bitchiness of some of the parents that just blew me away. No thanks. No appreciation. I don’t think I will be Read More »
mr. snaggletooth…
So a week before Christmas, I was helping Tyler brush his teeth when I noticed something white behind his bottom teeth. I got him to hold still to take a peek and there was a brand new tooth emerging through the skin behind the baby teeth. I touched the baby tooth in front of the new tooth and it wiggled. I was astonished. I said, “Tyler, did you notice that you have a wiggley tooth?” He touched it with his finger and he said, “Oh yeah! I do!”. This surprised me because for about two years he has been telling Read More »
