Make a Pretty Table Runner

April 30, 2013 by Angie 102 Comments

It’s Spring and I am craving beautiful, glorious colour! Lately, I have been putting into action some plans for a fun makeover for our dining/living room area. I have lots to share in upcoming posts {wink} but for now, I want to share with you one small project I finished for our dining area.

As part of my re-decorating plan, I was on the search for a colourful table runner to tie-in with some of the other changes I made in the living room. The few table runners I found were either the wrong colour, or way outside my budget…at $60 and $80 each. So I decided to make a table runner with some beautiful fabric that I found at a fabric store, and as luck would have it, Sears contacted me around the same time to see if I would like to try their Sears Kenmore 50 Stitch Sewing Machine. I was thrilled at the opportunity to be able to create my sewing project with a brand new machine.

So let’s get to work on that easy table runner first, shall we?

I chose to make a very simple rectangular runner so that the fabric could shine on it’s own.
And can I tell you that I created this table runner for just $12? Yay!

Table Runner
{Finished size approx. 13″ x 40″}

Materials Needed:
1/2 metre of fabric {I used a fabric by Valori Wells}
Thread in coordinating colour
Rotary cutter and cutting mat, or scissors

Directions:
1. Iron fabric.
2. Using rotary cutter and cutting mat, cut fabric to 13~1/4 by 40~1/2″.
3. Using an iron, press a 1/4″ seam allowance around entire edge of rectangle. Then fold again and press another 1/4″ seam allowance so that the rough edges are tucked in. Then pin baste the pressed edges every 3″ to 5″ inches, as shown, to hold in place.

4. Take the runner to the sewing machine and carefully sew around all 4 sides of runner using a straight stitch, turning fabric 90 degrees to stitch around corners. Cut threads when done. Finished size is approx. 13″ x 40″.
5. Press the table runner to remove all wrinkles.

Now stand back and admire the new table runner.
I am so happy with my fabulous new budget-friendly $12 table runner.
And let me share some of the wonderful features of my new Sears Kenmore 50 Stitch Computerized Sewing Machine.
This sewing machine was so easy to thread! The machine came with a full-size instruction booklet complete with pictures detailing each step. I had the machine ready for sewing in about 15 minutes.
As I began sewing my project, I found the needle & feed moved the fabric with a very smooth flow and created beautiful stitching to make my project look perfect.
I also love the clear see-thru plate that covers the bobbin which makes it so easy to see how the bobbin thread is doing and when it might need a refill.
This sewing machine has a computerized panel which makes it easy to make adjustments to stitch length and stitch width, and to access all of the other stitches that this model offers.
Changing stitches is as easy as gently pressing a few buttons!
This model also offers these options in addition to straight stitch:
Zigszag stitch sewing, utility and decorative stitches, stretch stitches and a one step buttonhole function.
Basically, this Kenmore machine could handle any sewing project that your heart desires.
This machine weighs just under 12 pounds, which makes it easy to take to a sewing class or a friend’s house for a project day.
I have mentioned only a few of the many features of this lovely Kenmore sewing machine, but there are many more!
It`s a wonderful machine and I loved sewing with it!

I love that material and how simple this project is.

I was thinking about making some rag quilts with all the little bits of fabric I have collected, that is what I would use a new machine for! Might need to make a table runner too!

Oh, how exciting! A sewing machine give-away! I inherited my mom's old machine, and it was finicky at the best of times…:) I would love to have a machine that is consistently reliable…and I don't have to hold my breath hoping it will work! I love to sew all kinds of things home related – curtains, slipcovers, and tablecloths. And, I've just recently discovered the joy of sewing bags.

Ooooohhh…. that sewing machine looks absolutely divine. The first thing I'd make would be the throw pillows that my couch has been desperately calling for. Then I'd probably tackle the faux roman shade that I've been planning for months.

Honestly, it would be fantastic to not have to fight with the stubborn bobbin of my current (not very efficient) sewing machine. I'm crossing my fingers that I win this beauty! 🙂

I would love a new sewing machine. I don't actually have one of my own – I'm always running over to my Mom's to use hers. And I need one badly for all the fabric projects I have stockpiled around here. First on the list is probably the pillows and bedskirt for Audrey's room.

I didn't know what to so with a yard and a half of fabric, but this would be perfect! So yes, a table runner would be awesome to make!

That is beautiful fabric! My sewing machine died last year and I've yet to replace it, so this would be awesome.

First project would be new curtains for my kitchen.

I would love to make a valance for our bathroom. We're renovating it and hope to be done this month. We've gone with new colors so we need to change other things, well everything for it. Sadly I'm not that experienced at sewing but i want to learn more and it looks like this would be a great machine to be able to do anything with.

Yippee! I LOVE to sew. I actually managed to do some this week (first time in months) but it was just repairs/alterations. I've been wanting to make my daughter a patchwork skirt forever. My straight stitch old sewing machine just doesn't cut it. Hope I win!

This table runner looks great with good instructions. It's now on my 'to do' list. I have been scouting out a new sewing machine so that I can join a quilting group next fall. Will now consider a Kenmore machine.

I am so excited for this giveaway. My current Kenmore sewing machine is over 30 years old – so an updated Kenmore that's computerized with 50!!! stitches – WOW!!! What wouldn't I make? Pillows – yep! Curtains – you bet! Runners like yours – oh yes! And more pillows! Maybe even some slipcovers! So excited! Pick me, pick me!!!! 🙂

My sewing machine has been making me cranky lately and seems to have a mind of its own, I would love a new snazzy machine! I would love to make sundresses for my daughter for this summer, and a bow tie for my youngest.

The table runner is adorable, I might need to find a bit of fun fabric and tackle that too 🙂

I'd love this machine – my old machine is wearing out. I'd love to make some clothing items out of material I have to give to my local woman's shelter. And then make some quilting projects.

I own a Kenmore Sears machine that is over thirty years old and would love a new machine. I would love to make a baby quilt for my new grandson due in July. Sears makes a good machine – I have never had a problem with mine but it does lack alot of the features found on new machines.

I'm ready to start sewing again after many years…. first a quilt for my much-awaited niece/nephew this fall; and next sewing with my friend in Dartmouth who makes pillow cases and comfort quilts for children with cancer. Gave my 33-yr old machine away to a local woman's shelter yard sale when I moved 2 years ago. Now ready to create again!
