“We will do the shopping, chopping, preparation and yes, even the clean up. In less than 2 hours you can assemble up to 12 delicious, healthy, ready-to-cook meals to be taken home to your fridge or freezer to be served at your convenience. An exciting new menu of meals is available every month.” I have been reading about the new meal assembly businesses for a few years now. They are a huge hit in the States, and it was only a matter of time before the notion spilled into Canada. We have 3 of these ventures in our city now. Read More »
the joyful simplicities of October…
potted mums. making caramel apples. enjoying fresh apple cider. getting out the flannel jammies. watching the kids get excited about Halloween. the cool fresh mornings. making pumpkin muffins. the feeling of getting ready to nest for the winter. a brisk walk in the afternoon sunshine. the beauty of the leaves.
the flu shot episode…
This is what I found last night on my way to bed…. my little one curled up next to my big one. He had a hard day yesterday. Flu shot day. It started as soon as I told him after school. The pleading. The begging. As I parked at the building, the sobbing got louder. The pleas more desperate. He started fighting when I was filling out the forms. He fought me all the way to the nurse’s station. We struggled for 10 minutes. (Where does this 6 year-old get this strength?) Everyone was looking at us…. the protesting got Read More »
the drudgery of making school lunches…
For 7 years now, I have been making school lunches for Hunter, but this year has seen a lunch for Tyler added to the mix. I am not a morning person…. not meaning that I am grumpy in the morning, but just that I am slow and not on top of my game. I could easily throw a lunch together for one child in the morning, but 2 sacs of food make it into the lunch-making special olympics. Thus, I must plan the lunches in advance and put more time & effort into the preparation. Tyler is an easy child Read More »
Blog Action Day 2007
On Monday, a very cool thing happened all over the internet called Blog Action Day. It is a day set aside for a mass posting about a single issue – this year it is the environment.
Blog Action Day was officially supported by the United Nations Environmental Programme. “UNEP welcomes the simple yet powerful concept of Blog Action Day and calls on bloggers around world to participate”. Over 20,000 blogs took part in the event. “At the heart of this innovative idea is the message that by uniting the world’s blogging community, we can reach a combined audience of millions to raise awareness of the environment, get people thinking and trigger a global debate. ” ~UNEP So, yes, I missed the actual day to blog my little piece about the environment, but I still want to Read More »

this is all that remains of….
Peanut Butter & Chocolate Pie. This helpless victim, made by Grandmother on the weekend, was taken down without a fight at approx. 3:14 am this morning. This is the second victim in less than a week. The suspect is approx. 5’10” with brownish looking fuzzy hair. Approximately 40 years old. Recently lost 30 lbs and claims his innocence. However, the trail of evidence leading from the fridge to his home office suggests otherwise. Suspect says he has no knowledge of why crumbs are everywhere on his desk & chair or why chocolate appears smeared around his lips. The cream cheese Read More »

put yer apron on….
I must admit that I am a bit old-fashioned. Not only do I love to cook & bake & be in the kitchen, but I also love to wear an apron…. not only for practical reasons( I am a very messy cook), but because of the sentiment of the apron-the women in my family wore aprons on a regular basis. I can especially remember at Christmas how you weren’t allowed to help in the kitchen until you donned the requisite apron. Putting on an apron means that you are about to do serious business in the kitchen and others in Read More »
halloween whoopie pies….
The girls got super creative yesterday… not only did they make 2 batches of whoopie pies, but they decided to make “Halloween” whoopie pies. I was upstairs reading with Tyler while the creative juices were flowing in the kitchen and they did all this with no help at all! I only had to EAT! They even cleaned up the kitchen! 11 year old girls are amazing! (And this sad little picture with the fuzziness confirms that my digital is needing to be replaced.)
love making whoopie……
PIES that is!! Many of my favorite recipes have come from my mother’s kitchen, but this is the one exception. This was not a recipe made in our house-the favorites in our house were brownies, chocolate cake, macaroons, & nanaimo bars. Whoopie pies were a favorite recipe of my best friend from elementary school. I have vivid & fond memories of going to her house for lunch or after school where her mom would have a plate of freshly made whoopie pies ready for us. Oh, how I used to love to go her house for her mom’s whoopie pies… Read More »
Happy Thanksgiving!!
We are so fortunate that Grammie & Grampie come to visit us as often as they do. It would sure be a long year for me & the kids if we only saw them once in the summer when we go home. It is such a comfort to know that Mom & Dad are willing & able to come here a few times a year. This is their 6th visit to see us!
the start of the skating season….
This poor blog has been so neglected!!! The start of the skating season brought some new issues resulting in us changing clubs from our home Club to the other Club. They are rival clubs and it was not an easy decision. It actually seemed harder for me than for Hunter. This decision ate up oodles & oodles of my time as I talked to & emailed anyone who would listen. I solicited opinions from the adult skaters that I know about what the best thing to do was…we actually went to team practices for both clubs for a week while Read More »
after the cake..
the candy bouquet was opened and promptly poured into bowls for snacking in the tent… which the group wasted no time in getting to.I set up a cooler with drinks for them, and I gave out lots of extra comforters, sweaters and socks so they would be wonderfully warm. They had a blast as they watched Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. I popped popcorn and delivered it to the tent. Then they decided to watch High School Musical. The most amazing part of all was that they were all asleep by midnight and I didn’t heard a sound until morning. (One Read More »
the candy bouquet…
the first stop for getting ready for the party involved a stop at the local candy store to order this special candy bouquet. The kids have been salivating over these bouquets forever, we just needed an excuse to buy one. The bouquet included 8 kinds of candy that Hunter picked out herself, and it was to be the candy treat for the movie night. Of course, we added our own gum stash on the plate below.
hunter’s b-day….
Our sweet babycakes recently turned 11. With each passing birthday, we rack our brains with how we can celebrate in a way that is unusual & different from the year before. This year we celebrated with an Ice Cream Dream Party & Sleepover at our house. We convinced Daddy to set up the tent in the backyard with our small tv and dvd player inside so that Hunter and her friends could have their own little drive-in style movie night. After consulting the forecast for a few days, we chose a day that looked like the weather involved no rain Read More »
tuckered out….
Chet gets us to the airport at around 7:30 pm to catch our 9 pm flight home. He drops us off and Hunter starts crying while we are going thru security because she has left her ipod in his car. Once we get thru security, I call Chet and he turns around to bring back her ipod and I go back thru security to meet him at the drop off spot. When we board the plane, I get out my book to read a little while the kids are looking out the window…. when it seems very quiet…. why am Read More »
TO…
Our plane arrived in TO at 7:20 am and my cousin Chet was there to meet us. He just recently graduated from U of T and he lives in downtown TO. We have not seen him for a year and we are so excited to see him. He knows TO like the back of his hand and we set off for the Hockey Hall of Fame. But first we decide to stop for breakfast since everybody is hungry. We go to a place called “3 Peppers” which is just down the street from his apartment. Tyler has toast, Hunter has Read More »

one of Tyler’s favorite parts of the hall of fame…
the cup…
Yes, this is the REAL Stanley Cup. The Holy Grail of Hockey. We all touched it.
CN Tower…
After we had finished at the Hockey Hall of Fame, we set off to see the CN Tower. We arrived around 12:30 and decided to have lunch on the concourse outside the Tower. Tyler & Chet had hot dogs and Hunter & I had crepes and we all had fresh squeezed lemonade. The weather is very humid and warm. Too hot to walk around almost. The wait to go to the obervation deck on the tower is 2 hours and I know Tyler won’t last that long, so we decided to head off to Chet’s apartment for while to stay Read More »
Legends of the game….
Chet took us to the store in downtown TO which reportedly has the largest collection of hockey cards in the world. Tyler’s budget for this store was $10. We saw hockey cards worth more than $1000. Tyler was looking for a Gretsky card… and he managed to find a $3.00 card.
Wii…
When the afternoon got really hot, we went back to his basement apartment to cool off. The kids had a great time playing with Chet’s Nintendo Wii, while I dozed a little on the sofa, since we were up so early.
Suishi…..
Chet took us to his favorite suishi place for supper, which was just a 2 minute walk from his apartment. It was really yummy. Hunter and I both had a chicken bento box. Delicious. Tyler had a fruit smoothie for supper.
Saturday, July 28…
Today we went into Halifax again with Grammie & Grampie. We went to Pier 21 for a little while to visit the gift shop. We are now buying little souvenirs to take back to friends in AB. Then the kids wanted to go to FREAK LUNCHBOX again to pick up more candy and T-shirts to take home. The FREAK is Halifax’s most popular and interesting candy store. Then we went to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic since the kids wanted to see the Titanic Exhibit again and the new exhibit for 2007- “Pirates”. The Pirates of the Carribean movies Read More »
Friday, July 27….
Today was an interesting day… we had breakfast at Uncle K & Aunt Z’s, lunch with Grammie P. at her apartment at Tideways and then supper at the R’s house. L’s was so sweet-she planned this little surprise birthday party for Hunter with a gift and cake and balloons for Hunter. She even gave Tyler a little gift as well. So lucky to have this wonderful family in our lives.
Thursday evening…
After I dropped C & M off to their Dad around 4:30pm, we went to Uncle K & Aunt Z’s for the night. We had delicious bbq’ed pork chops for supper & then Uncle took us for a 2 hour ATV ride all around the lake and surrounding fields. The kids were wild with excitement since they have NEVER been on an ATV before. Uncle had the kids up front with him, and a trailer was hooked onto the back for Auntie and I. We actually got stuck briefly in a mud hole, and guess who had mud spun all Read More »
Thursday, July 26…
I offered to babysit C & M today, as Mom was going to be out of town. We packed a picnic lunch and went to Aylesford lake for the afternoon and it was a really hot, humid day. The kids had a lot of fun playing and it turned out to be a very easy day for me, even with having 4 kids in my care.
Lobsters…
After we got home from Lunenburg, we scooted over to Halls Harbour for some fabulous fresh lobsters with melted butter for supper!! Super Yummy!
