Disclosure: This post was generously sponsored by Kashi. However, as always, I only partner with brands/products that I love and use in my own home. I have been feeding my family Kashi products for years, including those ‘tasty little crackers’, bars and cereal.
With Spring here, my family is really looking forward to getting our garden started this season. When our children were smaller, we did not have a lot of time to garden, so some years we just grew a few tomatoes in pots on our deck or herbs such as chives, dill and basil.
This year, we are looking for a second hand roto-tiller to purchase online so that our garden can be better than ever! We especially love growing vegetables so that we can make things like homemade salsa and pickles. Although we are not expert gardeners, we try every year with some successes {and a few failure} and when we have a success…we are happy!
And really, is there anything better than your own homegrown tomatoes?
I am super excited that Kashi contacted me and asked if I would like to help spread the word about their Plant It Forward program.
Kashi believes that we all need to know more about the food we eat and I couldn’t agree more! Kashi, through the Plant It Forward initiative, has contributed over $100,000 during the past two years to Evergreen’s Seeding Healthy Communities program to help build & support urban gardens across Canada so that communities can get closer to real food by planting it, growing it and nurturing it with their own hands.
I think it’s so important for communities to have the opportunity to grow real food, and to teach and inspire the next generation.
Growing things is such a fun experience for children. My kids absolutely loved starting things from seeds when they were younger!
Real food can be easy to grow and tastes so good fresh from the garden!
According to the Kashi Plant It Forward survey, less than half of all Canadians (46 per cent) have gotten their hands dirty planting, growing and caring for fresh fruits and vegetables. Perhaps more surprising is that one third of Canadians will not visit a farmer’s market or community garden this year. Kashi’s online video, When I Grow Up, shows the need to get Canadians reconnected to real food and where food comes from.
Kashi would really like to encourage Canadians to “Give. Get. Grow.” by celebrating the little farmers in each of us and to get us growing real food.
Whether we have access to a garden, or we simply grow potted tomatoes or herbs in recycled ice cream containers on a back deck or stoop, there are small ways that all of us can get closer to real food.
Kashi would like us all to Put Up Your Hands for Real Food.
Through the Plant It Forward program, it is the mission of Kashi by the end of this year to have planted or seeded 13,000 edible plants with hopes of harvesting 7,000 pounds of food…all while teaching 1,750 Canadians valuable urban agriculture skills.
Anyone can help contribute to the Plant It Forward mission by picking up a box of specially marked Kashi cereal or bars in their local grocery store, where with each purchase, Kashi will donate to the Plant It Forward initiative up to a maximum of $50,000.
In addition, consumers will also receive a free packet of organic seeds such as carrots, spinach, beets, kale or tomatoes, so they too can nurture their farming skills and grow a little real food at home.
Kashi would like to call on all Canadians to celebrate the little farmer within by sharing a picture of hands getting dirty from planting fresh food and sharing it on Twitter or the Kashi Canada Facebook page using the hashtag #PlantItForward. By sharing and joining the conversation, hopefully we can inspire each other to grow and care for fresh food.
