Spray Painted Bucket Planters…

May 25, 2012 by Angie 54 Comments

There`s a hole in the bucket, dear Liza, dear Liza.
Anyone else recall that song?
I learned it from Sesame Street when I was just a little tyke in the 1970’s and it was 1 of a very few kids programs on TV back then.
But anyhoo…there are no holes in the buckets I picked up from the dollar store for $2 each.
I had been looking around for some new planters for my front porch and I was so discouraged by both the prices and colour choices of what I saw.
While in the dollar store picking up some things, I saw these metal buckets for 2 bucks and thought with a little spray paint that they would be perfect.

I picked up some new spray paint colours from Walmart for $4 a can.

I decided to go with yellow to give the front porch some panache.
I spent some time trying to get those darn price tags off the buckets, but after 20 minutes, I just gave up and decided to spray right over them!
It took 4 very light coats to get the buckets fully covered.
I loved the end result… $10 for 3 bright & pretty yellow planters…not bad!
I spied these pink geraniums at Walmart for $6 each and I thought they would look fabulous in the bucket planters.
{Don’t look too close because you will notice another project to be done this summer…painting the entire front porch.}
I really love, love, love the yellow & pink together. It so bright & happy together!
And the beauty of spray paint is….next year these buckets could be painted in a completely different colour, as long as there are no holes!

Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

I recognize that awesome Dollarama bucket! Mine got a chalkboard spray paint makeover last year and it's still going strong. Time to add another to my shopping basket!

I was checking out the $4 Spray Paint at Walmart this week, too and was surprised to find that Krylon now sells their own version of Oil-Rubbed Bronze. I put it back because I only have plastic planters and it wasn't for plastic . . . but now, you've given me ideas!

The yellow and fuschia combo looks amazing (and even if it's chippy, the porch colour is fabulous as well). I hope to get some window boxes planted this weekend but there's a outdoor water ban on in my city right now 🙁

    Have an amazing weekend, Angie!

Oh! I really like that zingy yellow colour! I never thought to buy my spray paint at Walmart – and for $4.00 too! I have some clean paint cans at home. I may just treat them like you did and add to my planter collection. By the way – did you drill holes in the bottom for drainage??

Oh my gosh, you just made me laugh because I remember that song from Seasme St. It was an old "muppet" couple in rocking chairs singing the "Dear Liza" bucket song!! Too Funny! See, I knew we were meant to be friends : ) Anyway… I love these buckets. What a cute idea. Treasures can always be found at the dollar store! I love the color yellow you painted them – so cheery!!! And they look so pretty with the geraniumns.

This is great! We used to sing that song in music class all the time when I was a kid. 🙂 And LOVE the color. Yellow and blue, I'm seeing everywhere… maybe that is why it stuck in my head to redo my living room using those colors. Lol.

Anyone can spray to a decent standard so long as the basics are right. The tutorial starts with paint mixing techniques, then swiftly moves on to setting up the air pressure and fan shape on the spray gun.
