I have returned from vacation and am throwing myself back into projects around the house like nobody’s business.
It was great to come back after a fabulous 5 weeks in Nova Scotia because not only did I get lots of rest & relaxation…I got to come home and see my house with fresh eyes!
So my Mr. Tyler has been asking repeatedly for a new & BIGGER bed in his room.
He is a growing boy and he wants to say ‘bye bye’ to his twin bed and hello to a Double Double please.
Let me be honest here…his room is small.
I have been over the floor plan 6 ways to Sunday and there is no way a double bed could be added to the space without loss of a chest of drawers AND a desk. Boo!
I really believe every child needs a desk in their room, along with a bookcase.
I just cannot seem to bend on these issues…I think a place for quiet study in a private space is a must.
Let me share the new room plan:
I want to make a room that will take him to the end of High School…so it should be fun but also allow him to mature in it.
Remember that the goal is to add a double bed and keep a space for a desk and a chest of drawers.
After much careful thought… a LOFT bed seems like the best solution.
I didn’t want this solution, but a measuring tape convinced me otherwise.
I have been wrestling with this decision for weeks and weeks…trying to talk myself out of a LOFT bed.
But with the lack of square footage, it offers the best solution.
{However, I may change my mind, but the colour scheme will not change.}
And Ikea offers great solutions at affordable prices…because you know I am getting the ‘eyebrows’ from the husband.
He agrees with the new bed. The rest…not so much. {Men!}
So here we have the double LOFT bed…as it will look in his room with the space underneath for a cozy study space and a chest of drawers.
The chest of drawers that will be placed on the right side behind the ladder.
A desk & shelves will be placed on the left side. I will paint his current desk and add some shelves.
The new wall colour. Benjamin Moore’s Revere Pewter. I wanted a warm grey for this space in contrast to the black furniture.
The new bedding…a light gray that will take him right into teenage years.
Up in his little loft space, he will need a shelf for a drink and a few books:
And a wall lamp for reading…
And now for the fun part…zippy accents in red…like these pillows…along with some artwork and red draperies.

Do you know of another gray that would work well in this room?
What colour should I paint his desk? Red? Dark Gray?
Ready..set..go!

I love the colors! Just a heads up, we purchased an IKEA loft bed for our daughter without paying attention to how tall it was. Apparently, the ceilings in our old house were lower than we figured because she was within two feet of the ceiling. Nowhere near enough room to sit up comfortably.
We ended up chopping the lower part of the legs off to lower the bed. Now it's a great reading nook if she sits on a bean bag, but not enough head room for a desk and chair. She loves her bed though, I'm sure Tyler will, too!

Everything you have choosen sounds great to me! I like the colour you are going to paint the walls and love the zippy pillows!
Maybe paint the dresser the colour of the stripes in the pillow..red? Might add a nice punch of colour.
I so wish we had an ikea on the island!!!

Hope you had a great vacation! I think the room will look fabulous and I love the pillows. Maybe a dark grey desk with red knobs and a few other red accents in the room? Can't wait to see what you come up with!
Thanks for linking up to The Creative Spark – I appreciate it!

Have you tried shades of Grey by Daisie Janie? I mentioned her on my blog recently and her newest collection is all grey with some funky modern designs.
Can't wait to see how the room turns out 🙂

Great project to throw yourself into now that you are home, Angie!

Love your plan, and the colors. Sounds like you have some good, practical ideas for the room.
My boys have that same Ikea furniture in their room – except for the bed. Their rooms are large enough to accommodate queen sized beds.
Can't wait to see the progression!

Great start Angie, can't wait to see the finished room, sure it will be great. My guess would be a red desk with the grey knobs, only because it would bring out the red in the cushions to add some color. Love the grey. Have fun.

I love the idea of picking out something that he can stay with for so long. I cannot wait to move my daughter out of her nursery furniture but I really need to remember to buy something that can last.

I have used Benjamin Moore 'Metropolis' and Beautitone 'Mukluk'. The Metropolis has a green undertone. Mukluk is a suedey gray brown and I like it. I used it with a deep burgundy and looks great. Love the loft bed. I had a friend who did his PhD at the London School of Economics. His flat was literally the size of a single loft bed and a kitchen table. It was bedroom, living room, kitchen in about 300 sq.ft.

Those are the same colours I used in my sons room the last time we redecorated and it lasted him until he moved out at 23! (same Ikea dresser too)
I vote for painting the desk red, Aaron had a bright red bookcase and it really brightened up the room. We used a stainless steel table from Ikea in his room too for him to use building his models.
Good luck, I bet it will look awesome and he will love it.
