Hello there! If you have been following my blog, Twitter, Facebook, or Instagram this week, you know I partnered with Kellogg’s Breakfasts For Better Days program to help raise awareness about the real cost of skipping breakfast in school children. Breakfast for school kids matters because it really has an effect on their education. As part of raising awareness this week, I was challenged to skip breakfast for 4 days and to share how it affected my morning with videos for each day. {You can view the videos here: Day 1 , Day 2, Day 3 , and Day 4.} Today, I ate a full Kellogg’s breakfast of my favourite…Kellogg’s All-Bran Flakes and it made such a difference in my day, as you can see from the video below.
What did I learn during this challenge? I learned that missing breakfast has serious consequences for my day. Without eating my bowl of All-Bran Flakes, I was left feeling hungry and with a headache, a short attention span, an inability to focus and feeling very tired. It really highlighted for me how hungry children must really struggle in school. According to the second annual Kellogg’s Breakfasts For Better Days survey, it is a sad fact that 1 in 7 Canadian children arrive to school without breakfast, which has a a profound impact on their learning ability for the entire day. The same survey also found from Canadian teachers that students who miss breakfast lose an average of 104 minutes of learning time every day due to hunger, and that alone can add up to 3 months of lost learning time over the course of a year. The infographic below also highlights the impact of hunger in the classroom.
No child should have to go through the school day hungry. As a mom of two children, I know what a positive impact that school breakfast programs can have. When my daughter started school back in 2001, there was a breakfast program in her school and it was open to any student who wanted to visit. I remember the smell of toast, the clinking of spoons on cereal bowls and the happy chatter of children coming from the breakfast room!
Kellogg’s wants to work towards change and they are donating a portion of proceeds from cereal sales, to a maximum of $100,000, to it’s breakfast partners across the country.Kellogg’s has also made a global commitment to donate one billions servings of cereal and snacks, half of which are breakfasts, to children and families in need by the end of 2016. You can help by simply purchasing a box of cereal to support the Breakfasts for Better Days program.
