It has become a family tradition for us at Christmas to talk about how we can help other families in need and as a family {with teenage children} who watches the news on a regular basis, it always tugs at our hearts when we see stories of hungry children & sad conditions in other countries. The news recently has been especially tough to watch as there has been a lot of coverage of families who are desperately trying to leave Syria, and if they succeed, they subsist in refugee camps for years. With the holiday season upon us, it is not lost on me how much my children have already…regular meals, clean water, a warm bed, safety and security…and much, much more. Many families around the world do not have the things that my children take for granted, and as a mother, my heart aches for these families. The World Vision Canada Gift Catalogue is something that we always look at when we are looking for Christmas gift ideas. Last year we donated toys to a local charity and we purchased gifts for families through World Vision Canada. Last year my son chose to make a donation of balls to children because playing sports is important to him, while my daughter chose the gift of books because she loves to read.
This year, our family spent some quality time together talking about the meaning of Christmas and we chose to give a meaningful gift to the Syrian Refugee Crisis through World Vision Canada. With so much news coverage recently of Syrian families risking their lives over dangerous seas to escape to a better life, we have been moved by their plight. Our whole family saw the media pictures of the body of a dear little Syrian boy that washed up on a beach, and we were all upset and disturbed by this…especially when we learned that this boy’s family had been trying to come to Canada. We were elated when we saw that World Vision Canada makes it possible to donate directly to the Syrian Refugee Crisis AND the Canadian government will match cash donations made in response to the conflict in Syria until December 31, 2015. When our teenagers saw this, they immediately wanted to give to this cause!
