I decided to do something entirely different with the top of this cabinet this holiday season.
Instead of decorating this surface for Christmas, I thought the kids might appreciate a
‘Hot Chocolate’ bar for the winter.
‘Hot Chocolate’ bar for the winter.
They both love hot chocolate during our cold winters….especially before and after school.
This is such a simple project to create….I just grabbed some mason jars, made a few labels at avery.com, and filled the jars with hot chocolate, marshmallows, and mini candy canes.
I used a dollar store table cloth that I cut to size to fit the top of the table top for easy wiping & clean up.
I do have lots of pretty apothecary jars that I could have used, but that doesn’t make it kid friendly as I am sure that I would hear an occasional smash as a top would get dropped or accidentally knocked on the floor. Therefore, mason jars with wide, metal lids are the best choice for my 10 year old & his friends.
Afterall, I do want it to function well besides being pretty.
If this was for a one time party or for adults only, I probably would use apothecary jars dressed up.
But this for my sweeties!
Now the kids can help themselves whenever they like…and play hostess to their friends.
And look what arrived in the mail this week….homemade-treats-made-by-Grammie-and-taste-tested-by-Grampie….and mailed 3000 miles across the country.
Perfect with a mug of hot chocolate!
We are so lucky!
Thank you Grammie & Grampie!

Angie, are you the coolest mom, or what???
If my kids saw this they would clip on to my legs and not let go until I promised them a chocolate bar like this.
This is SOOOOO cool.
My husband want one of those Kuerig machines.
Guess I could buy this, set up a bar and make the whole family happy.
Best,
Annelie

I like a cup of hot chocolate in the colder months myself, Angie! Great idea! My kids used to like to come home to a cup of hot chocolate from school, too. I'd always have it ready for them when they walked in the door. I used to keep Redi Whip on hand too, for when we were feeling fancy. : )
Thanks for the tip on the Avery site. I went in and made new address labels for myself and my daughter ~ now I don't have to buy them!

I am totally going to set one of those up! What a fun idea (:

I wonder if cherry balls are a Nova Scotia thing?!? My grandmother makes up ice cream tubs full of them at Xmas time and tries to hide them from her live-in taste tester (my Grampie)!

You are such a sweet mom! =) I love this idea and I hope your kids did too. And how sweet that grandma sent treats for you all.

We're doing a hot chocolate bar for Christmas Eve this year! We always go skating at an outdoor rink in our town that has the most beautiful lighting display. Then we head home with some friends and have hot chocolate and sit by the fire while the kiddos open up their first Christmas gift – pyjamas!
I might just use a couple of these ideas! xo

I love this idea! I do have one question…do you use your Keurig machine to just do the hot water into the mug or do you use the MyCup for the hot cocoa mix??
Thanks,

Hi Angie,
Oh, very yummy, I know my girls would love the idea too! While I was unpacking some boxes from the garage I found our waffle maker…I brought it out to them last Saturday. My daughter made a batch of waffles Sunday and woke up the whole house with the scent of fresh waffles for Sunday breakfast. Don't we just have the best modern appliances now and days 🙂 The special parcel looks yummy too!
All the Best,
Christine

Very cool idea. This would be great for a party, too. In fact, I may just use it. (Since I don't have kids to set up a permanent bar for.) 🙂

How long did it take you to get the treats in the mail??? I want to send some Christmas treats to my husband and his army buddies in Germany and I'm wondering what would stay good the longest and the best way to package them??

Just love all of your decorations and handmade gifts.

@Marie Lester, look up the Baking Gals for some really great info on what you are doing. These ladies send baked goods to the troops overseas once a month, so they know exactly how to pack stuff (and how long it lasts).

Please tell me what kind of hot chocolate maker you use. The cocomotion only makes four cups and that isn't enough when my whole family is here. Thanks!
