a little mudroom tidy-up….

June 2, 2010 by Angie 16 Comments

I have been on a mission around the house for the past few days.
Tackling all those little jobs and areas that need attention.
And the above is what was accomplished today.
I had been staring at this little mess in the mud room for far too many weeks.
There hung 2 bulletin boards…one for each child.
I have found over the years that the best system for me for school papers is a visual system.
In previous years, I have have kept notices, permission slips, etc. in a binder.
And I have tried a system with papers in a file folder.
But the best system is a bulletin board where I can see all the little dates and details.
No searching in a binder. No scattered papers on the floor from a file folder.
Just a bulletin please.
Front and center.
I can check little details for field trips on the way out the door in the morning.
I can see a ‘hot lunch’ day coming up.
It only requires a quick tidy up at the end of the month.
You know…hang up a new monthly calendar. Throw away expired notices.
I also added a bulletin board for me.
I found that I like to have a place for my things too.
Like my yoga schedule.
And coupons.
And an inspirational picture from Martha Stewart Living to remind me to have more picnics.
I feel sort of guilty that my husband is not represented here.
He does have a home office with 2 bulletin boards of his very own.
{I don’t think he will cry about it or anything.}
It would be nice to have black-framed boards.
But we already had these $6.99 bulletin boards…. and I am all about using what you have.
I have had the black letters for about 7 years!
They have never been hung.
I have always been frustrated by how to hang things that come without hardware on the back.
I would rather go to the dentist and have a molar drilled that try to pound the little tiny nails that come in a hanging kit…. into a frame.
Luckily, I have come up with a trick that solves the problem….I now glue hangers to the back with Gorilla Glue.
The glue dries overnight.
And voila!
The item is ready for hanging.
No hammer required.

It works perfectly.
Many, many things have been hung in my home using this trick!

Loved seeing this! I've been toying with placing a board in my laundry room, but one for each family member is even better!

What a change – the wall needed something with more impact and the 3 boards plus letters above definitely do that. I love your inspiration pictures as well. Have you thought about just painting the frames on those boards black.

Oh my…this looks great and so organized. This is definitley a project I need to tackle, as the notices won't be hanging on the front of the new refrigerator anymore. I totally agree we moms need our own bulletin boards too! Stopping by from BTNOTP.

This is great! I've been wondering what to do with our "Art Wall" now that my kids are both in middle school and we don't have dozens of art projects to hang there anymore! Individual bulletin boards might just be the ticket. Thanks for the inspiration!

This is such a great project! I saw it featured on another blog and then saw that you linked up to the DIY Club linky. I've been thinking about incorporating some bulletin boards into my office, and you've provided the inspiration!

Great Job. I hate hammering those in too and have never tried glueing them. You should try the Dischangers too–they are another sponsor of ours and I love those little discs for hanging projects.

Thanks for linking up to the DIY Club and I hope you have a great weekend.

I love your gorilla glue tip…so great! Good job on the boards, too:) You should come by my linky party on Monday "Restyle Your World" saying good-bye to summer.

Your mudroom tidy up looks great! And if you had the time/inclination it would be so easy to tape off and spray those bulletin boards black.

I love it. I really am a visual person too and long ago gave up on too many binders or file folders. Especially for those NEED TO KNOW NOW types of papers kids have from school! Great job!

Thanks for the tip about Gorilla glue. My hangers are forever coming off my bulletin board – aggravates me! Solution!! Woohoo!

LOVE the gorilla glue idea! I'm totally snagging that 🙂 I also like the bulletin boards… I have a wall that is definitely in need of being made in to an organizational wall. This is a great idea, especially for the kids!

BTW, just paint those frames black and they'll be perfect for what you're wanting.
